SALINE, Mich. - The Spotted Dog Winery is growing. The store will remain in downtown Saline, but wine production will be shifted to an industrial park in the city.
"I think everybody in this economy has had to go out and kind of re-think how they do things, and, for us, that was to get our wines in more places in essence to get more sales," said John Olsen, owner of the Spotted Dog Winery.
Now seven years old, the Spotted Dog uses grape juices from California and Michigan to make a wide range of products.
"We produce quite a variety from sweet to dry, red, white. We do a pinot grigio. We do some of our own blends. We do quite a variety," Olsen said.
The Spotted Dog's Michigan connections help move and market the products.
"People are supporting local businesses, and we produce a local wine," said Olsen. "It's good for all."
Spotted Dog wines are now showing up in more restaurants and stores.
"Busch's is a very good customer of ours. Nino Salvaggio's, Randazzo's, Plum Market, Hiller's, we've actually got our toes in quite a few places," Olsen said.
The wine is catching on with great help from the catchy name.
"We had two Dalmatians and we were looking for a name that was kind of fun and whimsical, and Spotted Dog Winery was just the thing that bubbled to the top," Olsen said.
