FRASER, Mich. (WJBK) -- Classmates and friends of 13-year-old Sharon Arwood are posting photos and memories on Facebook as they mourn. The teen, an eighth grader at Richards Middle School, was running in gym class Thursday when she suddenly collapsed. Sadly staff members and emergency crews were unable to revive her.
"Student participating in gym class, and suddenly fell down and needed medical attention right away," said superintendent David Richards.
He told FOX 2 the school was unaware of any pre-existing medical problems. Arwood was on the track team.
Grief counselors came in to talk with students and staff members Friday, many of whom wore purple or purple ribbons, Arwood's favorite color.
"Our heart breaks for the family, and no one should have to deal with a situation like this," Richards said. "It's a tragedy and far too young."
Online, many people have been posting messages about Arwood. One student wrote, "Today has been an emotional day. Your locker is decorated from the top to the bottom."
Another wrote, "What happened to Sharon is a PERFECT example of you don't know what you got until it's gone."
There was also this message from a parent. "It's just heartbreaking thinking as a parent how fast a kid can go. I hope this taught you all a good lesson. This life is precious. You can lose it in an instant."
Fox 2 is looking for some good ideas on how to redefine Detroit. Have one?
