ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. - Five teens could face criminal charges for breaking and entering and stealing from a middle school. Oakland County Sheriff's deputies responded to the West Middle School when an alarm indicated a window had been broken there late Saturday night.
Five former students, all now 17, were at the school. According to Oakland County Sheriff's deputies, they were stealing laptops. A 17-year-old female was outside and four males inside the school.
"It appears as if she was sitting out kind of watching the area as kind of the look-out, if you will. But obviously our folks approached in a manner that they saw her, and so when the other ones started to come out, the accomplices, they also saw them, as well," said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.
Sheriff's deputies say when the teens realized they had been spotted, they left laptops inside and outside the school and then took off.
"They were startled and they headed to the hills, but we ended up getting them," Bouchard said.
Their alleged mischief at their old middle school could result in serious consequences for the teens.
"They're 17, which is the age when you're charged as an adult in the criminal justice system, so they've got some pretty potential, serious consequences facing them and it could affect the future of their life. I mean, just doesn't make sense on any level," said Bouchard.
The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office is reviewing the case of the teen suspects from this affluent community.
"My guess that they didn't need to break-in to a school to get access to a laptop," Bouchard said.
