DEARBORN, Mich. (WJBK) - Reverend Terry Jones' April visit to Dearborn led to an angry confrontation in front of city hall.
Jones claims that he is fighting radical Islam and the introduction of Sharia law in the U.S.
He has now said that he is returning on June 17 to speak at Dearborn's annual Arab International Festival.
"This is just a platform for him to get attention and further advance his cause of division and hatred," said Imad Hamad, regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.
Organizers have said in recent years the three day festival has drawn about 300,000 people and pumped $7-million into the Dearborn economy.
Jones said he does not want to stir up violence.
"He always raised that logo 'Stand for America'. This is a first-class example of someone who stands against America and against what America (represents)," Hamad said.
All things considered, including a brief stretch in a jail cell, Jones said he feels welcome in Dearborn.
"We got a very, very positive response. We got the type of response, actually, that we have not gotten any place else in America. It was obviously not from the Arab community, but from the community at-large there in Dearborn," Jones told us.
During his last visit, Jones fired off his gun in the FOX 2 parking lot. He said he would bring his weapon again in June.
"It's unfortunate that the more (of a) bigot your are and the more you are (an) advocate for bigotry and racism, the more attention you get," Hamad told us.
