DETROIT - The Salvation Army's red kettles and bell ringers are out in full force for the holiday season. The organization hopes to raise more than $7-million this year.
FOX 2's Lee Thomas caught up with Kirk Maltby from the Detroit Red Wings at Campus Martius on Friday. The Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign is close to his heart.
"It's a great cause. This is obviously a tough time of year for a lot of people going into the holidays... but hopefully we can raise a lot of money. It all stays local, and I know that the people that receive the benefits of these donations greatly appreciate it," he said.
FOX 2 found some special bell ringers out and about in metro Detroit, including retired radio personality Dick Purtan. Some even had their own little flare, including bell rings dressed as Michael Jackson and Elvis. You can see them by watching Lee Thomas' video report.
Back at Campus Martius, Thomas asked Maltby why he goes beyond the call of duty for The Salvation Army.
"With the Salvation Army, it's not just about the Red Kettle. They clothe people. They shelter people. They help with food," he said.
That's truly what it's all about. Whatever you can give is much needed this time of year. If you hear a bell, donate a little something and help somebody in your community this season.
