DETROIT (WJBK) - For most, skipping class usually results in detention.
But for nearly two dozen Detroit students Monday, skipping class or being late earned them a trip to the police station.
The Operation Safe Passage Task Force executed its first truancy sweeps of the new year Monday, focusing on the area near Denby High School.
The group is made up of several agencies including Detroit Police, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, and Detroit Public Schools.
By law, truants can be ticketed or fined, but instead many were given the option to perform community service and get counseling with their families during the sweep.
Members of the OSP Task Force hope the conversations that were started at the Eastern Precinct during the sweep will prevent students from getting into serious trouble at another time.
