TAYLOR, Mich. (AP) - A Westland man has been charged with first-degree murder and murder of a peace officer in the fatal shooting of a Taylor police officer.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced the charges against 36-year-old Tyress Mathews on Friday. He is accused in the shooting death of 31-year-old Cpl. Matthew Edwards at an apartment complex in Taylor on July 23.
Authorities say Mathews shot Edwards with a handgun, then was wounded after exchanging gunfire with Edwards' partner.
Mathews was taken to the hospital, where Worthy says he's still being treated.
Prosecutor's spokeswoman Maria Miller says she doesn't believe Mathews has a lawyer, and his arraignment isn't expected to happen this weekend.
Mathews faces life in prison without parole on the murder counts.
