myFOXdetroit.com Staff - Julie Bass has a vegetable garden in her front yard. "The price of organic food is kind of through the roof," says Bass, "So, why not grow your own?" ( see original report )
Ok, why not? But then the City of Oak Park issued Bass a warning, then a ticket and a few days ago Bass was charged with a misdemeanor and a possible 93-days in jail, all for having a veggie garden in her front yard.
Why? The city is pointing to a code that says a front yard has to have suitable, live, plant material. The big question is what's "suitable?"
That question may soon be decided by a jury. A pretrial is scheduled for July 26.
Since Alexis Wiley first reported the news of Bass's garden on June 30, Fox 2's web site, myFOXdetroit.com , has been lit up with viewer comments with thousands of web hits. The story has buzzed all over the internet. A Facebook support group called Oak Park Hate Veggies has been created to support Bass. The story has been published on ews aggreagation sites like Reddit and Drudge Report . It's made national headlines at Fox News , The Washington Post , The Huffington Post and many other main stream and not so main stream news sites.
There's also a grass roots petition drive taking place in Oak Park.

So what is about this story that has people so up in arms? Is this city ordinance a violation of personal liberty? On the other hand... don't you think there should be some kind of rules governing neghborhoods and associations? If so, how do you enforce them and who decides what the rules should be? ( In the video Fox 2 legal expert Charlie Langton explains what has to be proven in court to convict or exonerate Julie Bass )
