YPSILANTI, Mich. (WJBK) - There has been a violent attack on a teenage girl in Ypsilanti. When a girl told her classmate she may be pregnant, investigators said he reacted by trying to kill her.
17-year-old Cortae Diaz Kelly of Ypsilanti, who is also a student at Ypsilanti High School, is charged in a bloody attack.
Police said Kelly had a romantic relationship with another 17-year-old student, who also attends Ypsilanti High.
It was after school, police said, that the girl told Kelly she was pregnant. It turns out she is not expecting.
According to police, Kelly led the girl to a wooded area near the school. Using a knife, they said he stabbed her twelve times in the head, back and hands. The girl told police she played dead, laying silently until Kelly ran off.
Students at Ypsilanti High School are stunned.
"I don't understand how you can do that to another person. It's crazy," said Delisia Morris. "Usually doesn't happen around here, and people … felling unsafe, it's just real sad."
"Everybody is a little shocked, but then some people (are) thinking … are we safe, are we not," said Britney Davis.
The 17-year-old victim was rushed to intensive care and is now recovering.
Bond for Kelly has been denied. He's being held in jail.
FOX 2 talked with a girl at Ypsilanti High who had a class with Kelly.
"He was quiet," said Raven Smith. "He rarely talked. He participated in class, but he never really talked to (any) of the students in the class."
"It's shocking because … it's so close to home that you would never think that it (would happen) to people that you know, interact with … in everyday life," she added.
Kelly's been charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder and carrying an knife with illegal intent.
