HAZEL PARK, Mich. - Porschia Williams is the March winner of our "MI-School is Cool" contest. The Hazel Park student scored a $500 gift certificate from ABC Warehouse and $500 from the Detroit Area Chevy Dealers for her school.

Williams wrote a short essay highlighting two teachers and their success starting a leadership class, promoting fairness and diversity among students.

"Porschia's attitude and the great things that she has done, metro Detroit is very proud to be a part of it because they are our future... and the Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers are happy to rally around these students," said Scott LaRichie.

Read her winning essay below:

Dear My Fox Detroit, My school, HAZEL PARK HIGH SCHOOL, is cool because of two very special leadership teachers, Mrs. Keeler and Mrs. Sparks. They together pledged to create a leadership class beginning 2008-2009. They accomplished what they set out to do, and let me tell you it has been awesome. Our leadership class is trying to "BE THE CHANGE" promoting fairness and diversity among our blended student body. We believe that all students are equal and should have a fair chance to set goals and reach them. Now, I know that one student trying to make a difference may not go far, but we have 42 eager students who are working hard to make a change. Hazel Park is a small community but we are volunteering at the "American House", "Capuchin Kitchen" and the "Hazel Park Fire Station", just to name a few. Our teachers are not only teaching us how to help others, but to also give back within our community, and teaching us many skills that will help us thru out our lives. I feel special to be a member knowing it has changed me and hopefully some of the other 42 students feel the same. Have you made an effort today to make a change? If not, get busy!
