A Mumford High School student arrested near campus is found with a gun a day after he was suspended.
Police say there have been 20 incidents just over the past month at Mumford High. Thursday's caused a stampede as students rushed from the building.
Hundreds of students swarmed the sidewalks around Mumford High School. An ambulance left with nobody inside. Turns out calls of shots fired were not true, but students say someone inside had a gun.
"We (were) on the second floor, and everybody started running toward the person who had the gun. So, he was like, 'I got it here for anybody who wanna step up.' So, I started running," said one student.
"We're reviewing the tapes right now. We have video cameras throughout the building. We're looking at the second floor tapes where apparently there was some commotion resulting from someone claiming that they saw a weapon," said Steven Wasko with the Detroit Public Schools.
A stampede of students started streaming out of the classrooms, but police couldn't find anyone with a gun. Then they heard from a parent coming into the school.
"That said that they witnessed somebody driving around on the outside of the building in a vehicle that had guns," said DPS Public Safety Chief Roderick Grimes.
Dozens of officers searched for a gunman, and a block away from the school, Detroit Police found and arrested a Mumford student who had a gun. Police say he'd been suspended on Thursday. This as parents rushed to Mumford to pick up their children.
"I just came by my house and (saw) the helicopter circling around and decided to drive up here," said parent Suzanne Worthy. "That's when the people on the corner told me that someone was inside with a gun. So, I just come to see about my son because he's special needs."
This is just another incident in a long line of recent problems at the school. Grimes says students do have to go through a metal detector upon arrival at school, and police are concerned about the ongoing issues at Mumford.
"We have been taking precautions and we're continuing to do that, evaluate and take some other precautions," Grimes said.
