FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) - A stretch of westbound Interstate 696 is back open Thursday after police say a man was fatally struck while trying to change a tire during the morning commute.
Michigan State Police Trooper Mark Tinney said the man was struck by several vehicles near Farmington Road around 6:30 a.m. His BMW SUV was parked on the freeway's north shoulder.
FOX 2's Al Allen says several other accidents occurred as drivers tried to avoid the scene.
Authorities were forced to close I-696 westbound beginning at Lahser, all the way out to the I-96/I-275 interchange as they investigate the scene.
The victim is said to be from the area and in his 40s. His name has not been released.
Tinney says police are asking any motorists with knowledge of the accident to call 248.584.5750.
