Detroit Officials Continue Talks on Concessions

Text from the Associated Press

DETROIT - Detroit officials continue to negotiate with city unions and bargaining units on health, pension and other concessions.

Mayor Dave Bing had earlier set Tuesday as the deadline for the concessions and other structural changes to help the city avoid going deeper into debt. Spokeswoman Naomi Patton said Wednesday morning talks were ongoing.

All sides are operating beneath the imposing specter of a possible state-appointed emergency manager who could have the authority to redo union contracts. A preliminary review from the state showed a nearly $200 million general fund deficit for 2011.

A state review team working to determine if a financial emergency exists. It is expected to report to Gov. Rick Snyder by the end of February. The governor then could decide whether Detroit should get an emergency manager.
