COLEMAN A. YOUNG II
State Senator
Detroit
Wayne County
District #1

Why are you running for office?

In the words of Henry Van Dyke, "Man should aspire to do more than stand on top of the world. He should stoop down and lift mankind up." I am running for State Senator for the 1st District in order to add value to the lives of the people which I serve.

What is the biggest problem facing Michigan residents today and how would you solve it?

Unemployment is the biggest problem facing Michigan today and I would solve it by:

1) Investment in Green Infrastructure: wind turbines, solar panels, hydroelectricity plants, air compression technology, wave technology and energy conversion through storage of solar power in liquid salt.

2) Investment in Infrastructure & Transportation Construction. According to MITA, Michigan Infrastructure & Transportation Association, for every $100,000,000 million dollars spent on transportation construction 4,750 jobs are created. Also, where mass transit is constructed property values increase by upwards of 25%, to as much as 300% around the stations.

3) Investment in tax incentives for new technologies and industries that bring new jobs to our state.

4) Investments in educating our young people to prepare them for a future Michigan with Advanced Technology as its centerpiece.

5) A Graduated Income tax that would provide services our residents.

What's a better solution: finding revenue or cutting costs to meet Michigan's public education budget? How would you do it?

Finding Revenues is a much better solution.

1) Repeal Mandatory Minimum Sentencing that would save the State of Michigan $500,000,000 million dollars annually.

2) Go after Medicaid Fraud. According to the Attorney General's Office we could save $225-$800,000,000 million dollars.

3) Contingency Contracts with companies who help governments to find savings and these dollars are used to pay the contractor. If they don't find savings for the government then, they don't get paid. That's why it's called "contingency."

What's the best way to create jobs for Michigan residents?

Please See Question #2 Above.

After you leave this earth, what will they say about you?

He was a good man, who loved his people and helped others accomplish their dreams.
