DETROIT (WJBK) - The family of Aiyana Jones is demanding justice.
"I'm going to fight for my baby. I'm going to get justice for Aiyana," said Mertilla Jones, Aiyana's grandmother.
She said that's what keeps her going through the pain and grief of losing her seven-year-old granddaughter. Aiyana was shot and killed on May 16, 2010 during a police raid at her family's home on Lillibridge. She was asleep on a sofa when a bullet from a police officer's gun ended her life.
"Yes, I'm angry because this is wrong and this was injustice," said Roberto Guzman.
The emotional activist, the family and the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality are demanding an investigation into the police department's protocols. Members of the Special Response Team threw a flash-bang grenade before entering the house to look for a murder suspect. A reality television crew was there with cameras rolling.
"The special response team looked at the people in this house as enemy combatants," one person said.
"One person threw a flash grenade that hit Aiyana Jones in the head. One person shot," said Ron Scott with the Coalition Against Police Brutality.
However, the prosecutor is considering a warrant against just one male suspect. That suspect has not been named. The family has also filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
Officer Joseph Weekley was previously identified as the shooter. He remains on paid leave. We've been unable to reach him for comment.
"He should've been in jail waiting on his trial. He should've been locked up," Jones said.
"Why (does) he deserve to have dinner with his kids? My niece is not here. She can't have dinner with us. My brother will never see his daughter again," said Lakrystal Sanders, Aiyana's aunt.
Now that the warrant request has been submitted, the prosecutor's office says it will take some time to review. It's not clear when or if charges will be filed in this emotional and controversial case.
