OAK PARK, Mich. (WJBK) - A deadly and dangerous scene unfolded high up in the air at the CBS broadcasting tower off Meyers Road in Oak Park.
"Around 12:30 today, we received a phone call from the workers that were working on this tower. They had found a deceased black male at the very top of the tower," said Oak Park Public Safety Sergeant Jason Ginoplis.
Maintenance crews made the gruesome discovery. The man was a Detroit resident. His name was Lashjarr Stegon Gullap. He was 23.
Even thought he was deceased, getting him down from 1100 feet in the air was dangerous work requiring special recovery skills.
"Right now, we have three anchor teams from the Oakland County Technical Rescue Team. We have Independence Township, Pontiac Fire Department and Southfield Fire Department. Because of the height of this tower, it is a high angle body recovery at this point, so technicians have gone up the elevator and climbed up the final approximately 45 feet to the level that the deceased is at," said Southfield Fire Chief Peter Healy.
The emergency crews were able to get the body down. Investigators say it appears the man climbed to the top on his own.
The medical examiner says he died of traumatic injuries he received from falling from the top to the platform. He also says it was a suicide.
