MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (WJBK) - A local parishoner is under arrest, accused of sexually assaulting a girl inside St. Peter parish in Mount Clemens. Michael Lentini, 19, faces charges for attempted 3rd degree criminal sexual conduct involving another church member. Police say church members knew about the incident and kept it quiet until the girl's mother went to authorities.

Macomb County Sheriff's investigators say church personnel may have known about the incident and did nothing. Father Michael Cooney has been temporarily suspended from active ministry for not reporting the incident to police. It's believed this took place after a church service while others were nearby.

In a statement, Bishop Michael Byrnes says: The Archdiocese is appaled this could happen and expresses regret and apology to the young woman who brought this complaint forward and pledges to reach out to her and her family to offer help and promote healing. The 19 year old could face 10 years behind bars.
