(WJBK) - National conservative commentator and FOX News Channel host Glenn Beck ripped Detroit during his show Monday night, comparing it to a Japanese city leveled by an atomic bomb.

Beck said Hioshima came out better than Detroit after a nuclear weapon was dropped on the Japanese city at the end of  World War II.

"One city embraced the free market system and the entreprenurial spirit," said Beck. "The other (city) embraced progressive policies and corrupt government and unions. Bad policies and union deals helped rot this city from the core."

Beck went on to say the country is on the same path as Detroit due to progressive policies. He ripped the bailouts of General Motors and Chrysler, saying "we're embracing now a country that love corruption, special favors, union deals, big unions and bailing out businesses that should have failed because they were run poorly."

City officals reacted Tuesday to Beck's comments, including an invitation to Beck from Mayor Dave Bing to visit the city.

In a statement, Bing said: "Like many national media members, Glenn Beck has probably never been to Detroit, understood Detroit, and doesn't care about Detroit. We welcome him to see and experience Detroit for himself so that he can deliver facts, rather than repeat fiction."
