EASTPOINTE, Mich. (WJBK) - They are the one time Facebook photos that have a school board candidate admitting his own faux pas.
"Inappropriate," said Jon Gruenberg, Junior.
The 23-year-old is a candidate for East Detroit School Board and son of current school board trustee Jon Gruenberg, Senior.
"I don't think it's anything out of the ordinary for a college student to do some pretty whacky things when they're out having a good time," Gruenberg, Senior said. "As a parent, if I had known about these two years ago, I would've told him that they weren't appropriate. He should probably take them down."
"That was, I think, my sophomore year," Gruenberg, Junior told us. "People taking pictures all the time. They catch you doing anything."
"I don't even remember those pictures being taken."
What prompted him to run for office?
"I went up to the city hall. I saw that only five people at the time were running, so I decided why not? I'm old enough. I'm responsible. I feel like people like me," he explained.
Gruenberg, Junior said he has grown up a lot since those dated photos were taken years ago. He's a product of East Detroit Schools, a CMU graduate with a degree in criminal justice and sociology. He's minored in political science, and he hopes that will help him run a school district if he gets elected. He's even figured out how to save some money reusing his dad's old campaign signs.
"I just didn't feel like it was necessary to spend extra money on using something that I could already use. It's like recycling," he said. "I'm not saying that people up there get stale, but it's an old school mentality and I feel like they need someone fresh and young that's just been through it to kind of show them."
Gruenberg, Junior did have his Facebook page taken down on Monday.
