DETROIT (myFOXDetroit.com) - It's a torrent of water flowing constantly. It's a broken pipe in the basement of one of the buildings of the vast and vacant old Packard plant.

Lewis Dennison, a photographer who takes pictures of abandoned buildings in Detroit, alerted FOX 2 news to the monumental water leak.

"I found about a twelve inch pipe that's dumping millions of gallons of fresh water, it seems, into the sewer," said Dennison.

Lewis has reported the leak to the city.

"First, I called the City of Detroit Water Department and I left my name and phone number offering to come out and show them where this is. No response from them. I called them again, and they told me I needed to contact the Building Department," Dennison said.

Lewis says he's talked to people who explore the old Packard plant, and they say this water has been leaking for more than a year.

A spokesman for the Detroit Water Department says water for the entire Packard complex was cut off more than a year ago and someone may have illegally reconnected water service. The city will investigate the leak.

"After last summer listening to them battle it out about raising the price of water to all the suburbs, it's ridiculous because this is millions, millions of gallons going down the sewer," said Dennison.

The cost of paying for the wasted purified water goes to every water user across Southeast Michigan.

"I just want someone to fix it," Dennison said.
