Michigan Loses Varsity Lacrosse Debut

PONTIAC, Mich. - Michigan's lacrosse team lost 13-9 to Detroit on Sunday in the Wolverines' first game as a varsity program.

The school announced last year its men's lacrosse team would become an NCAA Division I program in 2012, with the women beginning varsity competition in 2014. The Wolverines have had a men's club team since 1940 and a women's club team for more than a decade.

Doug Bryant scored Michigan's first varsity goal, giving the Wolverines a 1-0 lead in the first quarter. It was 5-5 at halftime before Detroit took control with a five-goal third.

Michigan coach John Paul says he's not happy with the outcome -- but his team didn't come out intimidated.
