MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) -- Forecasters say a winter storm pushing into Michigan could bring 5 to 10 inches of snow in the west and more than a foot in the Upper Peninsula.
Snow was falling steadily Thursday night in Traverse City, and light snow was falling across much of the state.
In the western Upper Peninsula, a National Weather Service spotter reported a 12-hour snowfall of 8 inches in Gogebic County near Ironwood at 6 p.m. Thursday. Another observer reported 7.2 inches in the unincorporated village of Herman in Baraga County.
In the Detroit area, rain falling Thursday night was expected to turn to snow. The forecast called for 1 to 3 inches of snow by Friday morning, with 1 to 2 inches more possible by Friday night.
