(EndPlay Staff Reports) - A new year is a great time to forget your rough-and-tumble job-seeking past and start anew.
If you want 2012 to be one in which you make yourself a viable job candidate, then you've got to examine every effort and tool in your arsenal.
Here are five tips for your job search:
1. Take a close – and critical look – at your resume. If you haven't found a job yet, it's possible your resume is partly to blame. Your resume should market YOU, and celebrate all your achievements, experience and qualifications.
2. Your resume also must illustrate your unique value proposition: Zero in on what will differentiate you from your competitors in the job market. make sure it's not just a collection of job descriptions.
"Updating your resume means more than adding your most recent job or volunteer position. Shop it around to at least three people you trust and give them several days to get back to you with constructive feedback," writes Ashley Hoffman, director of marketing and communications at Brazen Careerist .
3. Another important component of your job search has to be networking. The adage it's who you know not what you know often rings true in the job market.
4. How's your social media presence? Make sure it's professional, because Twitter and Facebook are commonly used by job recruiters and HR professionals.
5. Are you looking for the right job? "Maybe you graduated with a certain major and feel pressure to look for jobs in that field, but they sound, well, boring," Hoffman writes. "… Before investing more time in your job hunt, take a step back and really think about whether you’re looking for the right kinds of opportunities. Making a change here could be what you need to stay motivated."
