(EndPlay Staff Reports) - In most cases, television commercials are an annoyance – something to be skipped so we can get to the good part.
During the Super Bowl, however, sometimes they are the good part. And, with social media playing an ever bigger role in advertising strategy, some of this year's biggest Super Bowl ads have already been seen – and gone viral.
"We wanted to get the buzz going," Audi CMO Scott Keogh told ESPN , "and I think the way we look at it now is we want to put our flag on top of Everest first. You want people talking about your ad coming into the Super Bowl, anticipating your ad in the Super Bowl and then boom! It's sort of like before a race you want to be in pole position, not last."
Audi's " Vampire Party " ad is a perfect case in point. Released on YouTube Jan. 25, the spot had over 2.7 million hits by Feb. 2.
Another car company, Honda, released its piece for the 2012 CR-V, a 2-minute, 25-second "mini-movie" titled " Matthew's Day Off ." The spot features Matthew Broderick in a spoof of his iconic role in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" – only this time he's all grown up and skipping work, not school.
As of Wednesday, the YouTube version of the spot had already garnered more than 6 million views, thanks in large part to Facebook users.
Acura recruited Jerry Seinfeld to star in their ad with the comedian trying to win over the first buyer of the new Acura NSX. " Transactions " has over 7.4 million clicks.
And at least one ad is a work in progress. In Coca-Cola's the " Catch ," one of the soft drink company's polar bear mascots drops and attempts to retrieve an ice cold bottle of cola. The twist? No one knows how it will end as of yet. Executives from the company will make that call during the game.
