Armed Man Shot Dead after Storming New York Court

(Dow Jones Local Media Group) - The armed man who was shot to death by a court officer after he stormed into an upstate New York court Wednesday was identified as a former landlord with a grudge against the city's mayor.

Two sources identified the gunman as Tim Mulqueen after the chaotic shooting in Middletown City Court. Mulqueen died of his wounds at Orange Regional Medical Center, according to police.

Middletown police said the man entered the vestibule outside City Court at 9:09am local time and opened fire toward two New York state court officers who were near the entrance.

One court officer was hit in the arm. The court officers returned fire, hitting the gunman.

The injured court officer was taken to Orange Regional Medical Center for treatment. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

As the investigation into the shooting continued, police entered Mulqueen's apartment at about 2:00pm Wednesday. Shortly after, a SWAT team arrived and ordered the evacuation of the homes surrounding the residence.

Mulqueen was arrested last summer after he showed up with a machete at Middletown Mayor Joe DeStefano's home, according to a source. His court case was still pending.

In 2000, Mulqueen was jailed after failing to make court-ordered repairs on one of his three rental properties in Middletown.

DeStefano has made a crackdown on code enforcement and rental properties the centerpiece of his campaign to improve the quality of life in Middletown.
