PROVO, Utah - Brigham Young University's basketball stars were left Thursday plotting a way to win without starting forward Brandon Davies, who was kicked off the team for having sex with his girlfriend.
The Cougars shockingly fell 82-64 to New Mexico on Wednesday night in their first game without the 6-foot-9-inch sophomore, two days after he acknowledged his transgression to BYU officials.
BYU dismissed Davies from the team a day later for violating the school's Honor Code, which forbids students from having premarital sex, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday. He was suspended for the remainder of the season.
"I think it was a surprise to everyone," Cougars coach Dave Rose said of the fallout, adding that he believed Davies would play for BYU again after sources said his future was yet to be determined.
The Cougars, led by National Player of the Year frontrunner Jimmer Fredette, were 27-2 with Davies in the lineup and had the inside track to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
Teammate Charles Abouo said, "Everyone makes mistakes in their life. We are reaching out and trying to help him get through this."
Davis was third on the team in scoring at 11.1 points per game and is the team's top rebounder.
