Fox 29 Investigates: Underground Dentist

Posted:

Fox 29 Investigates has learned that state dental regulators have moved against the woman we found operating an underground dental clinic in South Philadelphia.

Her name is Khempeth Syhalath, and we met her in a South Philly basement where she had a fully equipped dental office – only, she's not a dentist.

Now, she's facing state action and so are two licensed dentists, Fox 29's Jeff Cole reported.

The state dental board alleges Syhalath – formerly licensed as a dental assistant – went beyond what her license allowed while working in a Pine Street dental practice.

The state claims she placed sutures in patients.

The dental board also alleges dentist Jon Richter, whom she worked for for nearly two decades – allowed her to "treat, and dismiss patients without supervision."

Richter faces state action, as does dentist Ira Sheres, who worked with Richter.

Syhalath and Richter did not return calls for comment.

Sheres' attorney says he didn't know what Syhalath was doing, and they'll fight the state action.

Back in March, we asked Syhalath about that South Philly dental office of hers.

"Are you a dentist?" Cole asked.

"No," she answered.

"What's going on in the basement of your folks' home?" Cole followed-up.

"It's nothing," was Syhalath's answer.
