Governor Quinn, Sign Illinois School Reform Bill: FOX Chicago General Manager Mike Renda

The Illinois legislature has passed historic school reform legislation and it’s now on to Governor Quinn’s desk for signature. FOX Chicago’s General Manager Mike Renda has a request:

Governor Quinn. Very simply, we ask you to sign the school reform bill that is now on your desk. Senate Bill 7 passed the House by a vote of 112-1.

This state is on the verge of taking a gigantic step in making our schools better by:

  • Improving teachers
  • Rewarding the deserving teachers
  • Lengthening the school day in Chicago by as much as 90 minutes
  • Eliminating the first in – first out in teacher layoff decisions
  • Reducing the threat of teachers strikes in Chicago

The last point is now the sticking point. The Chicago Teachers union is trying to weaken the strike provision in the legislation at the 11th hour

We can’t afford this back stepping. The CPS system needs to take dramatic steps with a huge deficit looming

Sign the bill, Governor. Stand strong and do the right thing for the school children in our state

Illinois deserves better.
