The National Zoo says 4-year-old panda Tai Shan is headed to a panda base in Sichuan, China next week.
The zoo says the popular young giant panda will go to the Bifengxia Panda Base in the mountains of south-central China.
FedEx is donating services to transport Tai Shan and a 3-year-old Atlanta panda to China aboard a Boeing 777 freighter.
Zoo officials announced last month that Tai Shan would be sent to China for breeding. He has been one of the biggest attractions at the zoo since his 2005 birth but is property of China.
He is scheduled to fly to China on Feb. 4.
A goodbye party is set for Saturday at the zoo. The last day of public viewing is Wednesday.
