It is an incredibly disturbing case of child abuse. A 13-month-old girl is near death, and a doctor is accused of raping her.
31-year-old David Montaldi is accused of sexually assaulting and abusing his girlfriend's 13-month-old child, who is now in extremely critical condition.
"If you look at the condition of this child, absolutely incredible how a person can even think of doing something like that to a child," said Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel.
Montaldi was a doctor in training, a former resident at Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center up until a few weeks ago, although it is not clear why he was let go.
Investigators say he was babysitting Sunday night while his girlfriend went to work at Mount Clemens Regional. He called her to say something was wrong with the baby and that he thought his 150 pound bull mastiff had smothered the child.
The mother came home and immediately called 911.
"Couple cop cars, fire truck, an ambulance and that's that," said one man. "I think it was a baby because the way they had it wrapped up in a blanket."
"His first stories and indications to the officers just didn't make any sense to the officers whatsoever. Obviously the dog (lying) on the child, they were very suspect of that to begin with," Hackel said.
The child was taken to Mount Clemens Regional and transferred to Children's Hospital in Detroit.
"We were advised by the medical staff there that there was some severe injuries to the child indicating possibly three to four skull fractures, some issues dealing with criminal sexual conduct. Indications that there was some sexual assault that may have taken place with the child and some pretty severe bruising to the child on its body, as well as its head," said Hackel.
Investigators say they found substantial evidence inside the home, but they would not elaborate.
Montaldi's father was at his son's Mount Clemens home, but did not speak with reporters.
"We found some significant evidence that would indicate there was a sexual assault that took place at that house, and that he was involved in it," Hackel said.
Criminal sexual conduct in the first-degree is a life felony. Montaldi is being held without bond.
