U.S. Rep. Fred Upton of St. Joseph has moved on to November's general election with a Republican primary victory over former state lawmaker Jack Hoogendyk.
With 86 percent of precincts reporting, Upton had 56.8 percent of the vote to 43.2 percent for Hoogendyk of Kalamazoo County's Texas Township.
Upton is running for a 13th term in Washington. He faces Democrat Don Cooney, a Kalamazoo city commissioner and former Roman Catholic priest, in November.
Cooney ran unopposed in Tuesday's Democratic primary.
Upton beat him handily two years ago.
