Happy Memorial Day.
And respect to those who died wearing the uniform. And respect to those today wearing uniforms of every stripe in the service of the general welfare.
Speaking of uniforms, I have learned that the 40 highest ranking members of the Detroit Police Department will embark on a retreat next week to discuss police strategy and build morale.
Where will they hold this two day retreat?
Belle Isle, perhaps?
The Guardian Building?
Too many feds running around there.
It happens that the Detroit Police won't be keeping those precious dollars right here in Motown – a city desperate for any sort of tourist dollar.
Instead, your police command staff will be going to Lansing. Why? Police brass wouldn't say. Maybe because it's safer there.
Ask yourself: do we even need the police brass taking a working holiday considering we're in the middle of a Depression, the police budget to be cut by $75 million and crime spiraling out of control?
And then ask yourself, what's the cost of this mini-getaway? A ranking commander said he did not know. But last year, I'm told, the cost was upwards of $100,000 with hotel rooms, meals and city gas used to power city owned cars to drive up there.
That ranking commander wanted to assure us all that the money will not be coming out of the general budget, but rather money used for training.
That's great. Because patrol officers certainly don't need training. They don't need new squad cars. They don't need radios because they use their own cell phones to check license plates -- paid for with their own dime.
I'm told the brass will stay at a luxury hotel with a work out gymnasium and a view of the Capitol Building. They will be served breakfast, lunch and a sit down dinner.
Gentlemen, have a terrific time and stay away from the raw shell fish buffet at the hotel bar.
