SHELBY TWP. Mich. -

A massive water main break has shut down 24 Mile Road west of Schoenherr in Shelby Township. Video from SkyFOX shows water gushing from the ground in the middle of the street. Police are on the scene and are working to detour traffic in the area.

FOX 2 is being told this is a 36" Detroit Water and Sewerage Department main that has ruptured. This is happening near the Mandel Greenhouses and Florist. So far there is no word on exactly how the break happened.

In a statement on its website Shelby Township is warning residents they are under a boil water advisory. Due to a break on the 36" DWSD water main that supplies the Shelby Township water supply, a boil water advisory is being issued until further notice. Any use of water for human consumption should be boiled for a minimum of 5 minutes and allowed to cool prior to use. All non essential use of water should be discontinued immediately.

Residents in the city of Rochester, Lennox Twp. have also been told to boil their water before use.
