Detroit Could Pull the Plug on Streetlights

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

A surprise announcement from the City of Detroit today say that they will be pulling the plug on thousands of street lights in a hope to save money. Many believe that the saving money this way, could cost some Detroiters their safety.

Right now, 40% of the 88,000 streetlights are broken in the city, and Detroit can't afford to fix them. Mayor Dave Bing plans wants to create an authority to borrow $160 million to upgrade and reduce the total number of streetlights in the city to 46,000. This plan could save the city an estimated $10 million per year.
