Wielding rifle, man shot, killed by police in Minneapolis

Posted: Updated:

A neighborhood in the north metro is still reeling after a police officer shot a young man walking down the street carry a rifle.

Witnesses confirm Dontay Wright was carrying a rifle Thursday night, but some family and friends are still having a hard time believing it.

All day long, Wright's family and friends stopped by 53rd St. and Emerson Ave. N. to drop off pictures, flowers and messages – the spot where Wright was shot and killed.

Tensions flared after rumors spread that the officer shot at someone only carrying a baseball bat, but investigators say those rumors were not true.

"I'm still in disbelief that it happened," said neighbor Janelle Percy. "I've never had something like this happen to someone I know so close."

Some, like neighbor Tony Case, thought police over used their power.

"There was no reason," Case said. "They could have tased him; hit him. But to shoot him four, five, six times? They overused their power."

The 20-year-old, nicknamed "Chicken Wang," was a student at Brooklyn Central Academy, where he was days away from graduating with his younger sister.

School officials say he loved music, and planned to study music production after school.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the shooting.
