FCS Reporter's Notebook: Elmwood Park's new village manager, a problem in the 33rd ward

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Since Mike isn't here this week, I'm going to give you a two-fer, starting in Elmwood Park.

Watch for some fireworks this week in that leafy west suburban village when the village board meets to talk about its new village manager.

Paul Volpe has years of experience in municipal government, most of it in the city of Chicago, and is generally highly regarded for his fiscal expertise.

But it's his connection to one of the city's all-time political debacles that I'm told will have Elmwood Park opponents packing the village board meeting.

Volpe is the guy who helped put together-- then vigorously defended--Mayor Daley's privatization of the city's parking meters.

Volpe served as the mayor's chief of staff when that infamous giveaway was slapped together and ram-rodded through the city council.

And while Volpe should have no trouble being confirmed in Elmwood Park-- Mayor Pete Silvestri controls the board—and expect to hear loud catcalls from the opposing political party, especially with an election coming up next year.

And then there's something that happened last week in the normally reliable 33rd ward.

Dick Mell has been alderman there forever and usually stays on top of constituent services. So my daughter's school applied for a permit to close their block for the end-of-the-year picnic.

On Wednesday morning, a 33rd ward streets and san pickup truck pulls up and the guy gets out and starts posting street closure signs. Problem is, they had the wrong date. I mean, really the wrong date.

Printed on the signs was "Saturday June 6." We had to tell the guy there is no Saturday, June 6, at least not until 2015.

So as they scratched out the Saturday part and hung up the signs anyway. And you wonder why people get so angry about parking tickets in Chicago.
