SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County kicked off its building season in a unique way in Southfield.

This year's plan is to rehab six empty houses instead of building new ones.  The hope is to strengthen communities, make neighborhoods more stable and to get families into properties in established areas.

"I think it's a great strategic move.  There are so many homes on the market that Habitat going about this really helps the community and keeps neighborhoods stable," said Joe Hejka, a Habitat for Humanity house leader.

Habitat worked with the City of Southfield to identify homes that would benefit most from a renovation.
