Detroit's Belle Isle is getting two new U.S. flags to replace ones that were worn and damaged.
Walled Lake-based Armaly Brands is hosting a ceremonial flag-raising at the island park in the Detroit River on Thursday, which is Flag Day.
The maker of Brillo and other products donated the flags, one near the entrance to Belle Isle and another along the side that faces Canada across the border.
Company President John Armaly Jr. says he noticed the worn flags during a trip to Belle Isle. He says the contrast to a clean, crisp Canadian flag visible across the river was "deeply disturbing."
The company says it's also making a donation to support upkeep of the flags. Copyright 2012 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
