SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Cliff Avril wants to be a member of the Detroit Lions for years to come.

The defensive end appeared on FOX 2's 'The Nine' Wednesday to discuss his involvement with the United Way, but the talk turned to the upcoming season and his current contract talks.

The Lions have place a one-year, $10.6 million franchise tender on Avril, which he has yet to sign. "I want to be a Lion long-term," said Avril. "I don't want to just keep signing one year deals."

Avril says contract talks are still ongoing. "We're still working on it. Hopefully, we'll get it done."

The Lions open training camp on July 16.

"We have a chance to be real good," Avril said. "And I want to be a part of the reason why we're succeeding."

Avril recorded a career-high 11 sacks in 2011.
