SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -
Ten-year-old Emily Ann Hauser misses ribs, but the Novi girl knows certain foods are off limits.
"My stomach wasn't feeling good. My stomach would like hurt a lot."
As a baby, Emily Ann had to deal with many medical challenges, but at the age of eight, she got a very adult diagnosis -- colitis disease.
"The disappointing thing is you have a child who wants to enjoy life and food and she has restrictions, so that's disappointing, but Emily's adapted well and does pretty good with her diet," said her father, Erik Hauser.
Colitis is like Crohn's. Both are types of inflammatory bowel disease attacking different parts of the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms include abdominal pain and persistent diarrhea. The cause isn't really known, but the unpredictable diseases affect about a million and a half Americans, including tens of thousands of children like Emily Ann.
Emily Ann is excited to be the honored hero for the Take Steps Metro Detroit Walk to benefit the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation Michigan Chapter. For the child who loves to dance, she will gladly lead the parade of people, raising money to find a cure for these difficult diseases.
"She's my little hero," said her mother, Michelle Dewinter-Hauser. "As an adult, I don't know if I'd be able to handle it like she does."
"Emily's gone through a lot and has persevered through it all," her father remarked. "She's a very happy person, very giving. She's really a role model for all."
The Take Steps Walk is happening Saturday, June 23 in Royal Oak. If you'd like to join Emily Ann and thousands of others, visit www.cctakesteps.org.

Making healthy choices at the grocery store can be difficult. With deceiving labels, and buzz words like 'organic,' 'all-natural' and 'heart-healthy,' it's tough to decide what to buy.
