On June 25, 1972 DTE Energy Music Theater, then known as Pine Knob, hosted its first concert with a performance by teen heartthrob David Cassidy.

This summer, 40 years later, four acts who also performed in 1972 will hit the stage at DTE. Those performing will be The Beach Boys on June 30, Neil Diamond on July 3, Chicago on August 1, and Smokey Robinson on September 15.

DTE Energy Music Theatre was originally known as Pine Knob Music Theatre, and was named partly due to its location next to the existing ski hill, Pine Knob. It was the nation's largest outdoor amphitheater when it opened.

Since its opening, DTE Energy Music Theatre has hosted more than 3,000 shows.

In Pine Knob's promotional material, the new amphitheater was described as, "Built in a beautiful setting, with a semi-thrust stage and bowl-shaped seating." The facility was seen as a "modern entertainment concept." The promotional material also said, "Refreshments of all types will be available, including ice-cold beer. A boutique row will give audiences a place to browse, and picnic areas will afford the opportunity to relax while being entertained by such great names as Andy Williams."

A historical timeline can be seen on DTE Energy Music Theatre's Facebook page. Fans can also submit their favorite concert memories or post photos from their favorite shows.
