Keeping pets cool during fireworks

Posted: Updated:

Many pets run away near the month of July because they fear the sounds of fireworks.

"Their natural instinct is to flee. So, flee just means run as far away and as fast as you can go," said Corinne Martin from Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society. "It's really important to keep them confined, safe or in a room with radios – whatever you can do – to keep them from fleeing."

Martin also expressed that identification is important. She said if you don't have an ID tag, write your number on the back of a collar or bandana with a magic marker.

FOX 2 pet of the week, a Pitbull Terrier named Modi, was hit by a car at 8 Mile and Harper Road. "The Harper Woods Police spent hours chasing him down," said Martin. "He was severely injured and was brought to Harper Woods Veterinary Hospital."

Harper Woods Veterinary Hospital said the only way to save two-year-old Modi's life was to remove his leg.

The word "Modi" means "courage" and Martin explains him as "quite adaptive" when it comes to the adjustment of having only three legs.
