Recent high school grad drowns in Lake Minnetonka

Posted: Updated:

Rescue crews are looking for a 20-year-old man who went missing in Lake Minnetonka on Tuesday afternoon.

Officials say the man was boating with four other young adults when he decided to jump into the water for a swim near Big Island at 4:30 p.m.

The man did not resurface and has not been seen since.

Family members tell FOX 9 that the young man deputies are looking for is 20-year-old Kennedy Maddox, of Minnetonka.

Maddox and several friends were on a boat celebrating their recent graduation from Minnetonka High School a few weeks ago when Maddox jumped in the water and never came back up.

A friend on the boat dove in to find Maddox but there was no sign of him.

"He was on the boat with the boys and it was warm and he wanted to cool off and he jumped in. His friend jumped in and couldn't find him so we know very little. We're just praying and I'm still praying for a miracle," said Maddox's mother, Ilene, on her way to the sheriff's office to meet with searchers.

Maddox's mother said her son did know how to swim, but he was not wearing a life jacket when he jumped in the water to cool down.

Crews focused their search the water about 300 feet from Big Island. They say the water is about 60 deep in the part of the lake where Maddox disappeared.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is using sonar to try to locate Maddox, who is believed to have drowned. Water Patrol workers will likely be searching throughout the night.

Officials say this would be the fifth drowning in Hennepin County so far this season and the first on Lake Minnetonka this year.

A Minnesota State Patrol helicopter was sent to help with the search, and fire departments from Long Lake, Wayzata and Excelsior also assisted.
