A Detroit-area woman who collected welfare benefits despite winning a big lottery prize has pleaded no contest to fraud.
There is no dispute that Amanda Clayton of Lincoln Park collected about $5,500 in food aid and medical benefits after winning a $735,000 lottery prize before taxes last year. After a report by a TV station, the state charged her with fraud and said she should have informed the state about her windfall.
The 24-year-old Clayton pleaded no contest to a felony Thursday in Wayne County Circuit Court. She's likely to be placed on probation.
Gov. Rick Snyder signed a law in April that requires lottery officials to inform the Department Human Services about newly minted winners.
