New Detroit boutique offers homegrown clothing - Fox 2 News Headlines

Ty Haygood introduced the streetwear trend to Detroit years back when he created the clothing line called District 81.

"We started off in the clothing business with just button up shirts.  At that time people bought, if it was a shirt, the same brand shirt, the same brand bottom.  Now it's really popular for people to buy a shirt and a different company's bottom," he said.

Joe Lawton took what he learned from Haygood and launched his own brand, Joe's Coney Island, a line that combines cutting edge fashion with food themes.

"Joe's Coney Island first originated in my head as a thought for being a way of saying Detroit and a way people could support Detroit without knowing it so much.  We have such a negative outlook with some of the media, and I felt as if, since coney islands are synonymous with Detroit, it was a way to represent the brand of Detroit all over the world," he said.

Both with the goal of creating a more fashionable Detroit.  They're now taking the next step by merging their brands together into one retail location.  The Flagship Boutique located on Livernois between Seven and Eight Mile is the new hub for homegrown quality clothing.

Although their store is just starting out, stars like Akon, Big Sean and Young Buck have already been seen wearing their brands.

"It really feels good to go on the internet and next thing you know you see your product in somebody's ad for their mix tape or somebody calls you and says, 'I just saw Big Sean doing an interview in one of your T-shirts' or 'I just saw Akon in this photo shoot for his new album wearing one of your hoodies,'" said Haygood.

The clothes are not only unique and trendy, but they're also reasonably priced with a unique city look you won't find anywhere else.

"When you go and wear it out of town, people always ask where did you get that from, and you can tell them Flagship Boutique in Detroit," Haygood said.
