DETROIT (WJBK) -

Police say a 4-year-old girl accidentally shot herself after finding a gun in a vehicle.

Family members aren't commenting, but police tell FOX 2 that girl was playing inside her father's Cadillac SUV when she discovered a Glock 9 mm pistol in the glove box and fired a round into her thigh late Sunday evening.

Police say the girl is in stable condition at a Detroit hospital and is expected to fully recover. "I was sitting on my couch and I actually heard the shot," said Kelly Segar, who lives down the street. "But it happens so much around here that I don't even get up and look anymore."

The girl's father has his concealed pistol license. "I think they're nice people," said neighborhood Waymond Fordham, who was surprised to hear about the shooting. "He kind of watches out over the neighborhood."

Officials at the Detroit Police Community Services unit say they are offering free gun locks. Those interested can call 313-224-3945 for more information.
