Mayor Bing imposes union cuts

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

The mayor calls it a tough day for Detroit. He's imposing sweeping cuts to the city's unions. It comes one day after City Council rejected the employee union cuts.

Wednesday, Maybe Bing announced plans to impose the new union contracts effective immediately. Bing, on a press tour, stopped by Harms Elementary School for a neighborhood initiative meet and greet. After the event, he was right back on message, saying he had to make a decision he knows will negatively impact the lives of Detroit workers but that he has to worry about 700,000 people in Detroit - not just the city workers.

Contracts for nearly all of the city's 48 collective bargaining units expired June 30th. Despite City Council's Tuesday "no" vote, Mayor Bing is imposing 10% union pay cuts, changes to work rules and major cuts to health care. It's a move that will save the city $102 million a year

In a statement to Fox 2, Dan MacNamara, President of the Detroit Firefighters Association says the Mayor's decision is sacrificing public safety to bust unions. He says they had an agreement opening the contract and preserving safety but he ignored it.
