Lawyers and doctors battle over medical malpractice
An issue between doctors and attorneys that was revamping the state's 1994 medical malpractice law found its way back into the state capitol this morning.
Bitter rivals -- doctors and attorneys -- packed the senate committee room on the emotional issue of medical malpractice.
"One of the things we'd like is to get rid of non-meritorious law suits," said Dr. Rose Ramirez.
The senate committee is considering legislation that would, for the first time, grant immunity to doctors who may have made a mistake but believed they were doing the right thing at the time.
Trial lawyer Norm Tucker argues that if the standard of granting immunity for doctors was applied to other professions, bad things would happen.
But, the other side of the issue contends that the doctors want the same system that the lawyers have.
The two sides are used to battling each other. They will continue to do so when lawmakers return here next month.
