DETROIT -

A man who attacked and carjacked an 86-year-old World War II veteran at a busy Detroit gas station has been sentenced to five to 12 years in prison.

Paris Gomillion apologized for the daylight carjacking in February of Aaron Brantley, who wasn't in the courtroom in Detroit for Friday's hearing.

Gomillion also was ordered to pay $232 in restitution and perform 120 hours of community service. The Wayne County prosecutor's office says he earlier pleaded guilty in the case.

Brantley was pumping gas when he was knocked down and had his keys snatched.

Brantley has said nobody helped him right after the assault. Surveillance video showed him crawling as several people pass by him.
