WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) -
Police say a gunman was killed and an officer was shot in a protective vest during an exchange of gunfire on Warren's south side.
FOX 2's Al Allen reports the shooting happened around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday in the 7000 block of Paige Avenue near 9 Mile Road and Van Dyke. Allen says more than 60 shell casings were littered across the yard where the gunman stood shooting.
Warren police say two officers were involved in the incident. One was not injured. The other, a 35-year-old veteran officer, was struck by one bullet in his bulletproof vest. He was taken to a hospital and was expected to be OK.
Police Commissioner Jere Green says officers were called to the home following a report of a man holding a resident at gunpoint. Green says the 53-year-old downriver man came out after officers arrived and fired a semi-automatic handgun at police before officers returned fire.
A 21-year-old woman who fled was in custody.
Police are still investigating.
